In her teenage years, Cates, initially a passionate dancer, had to abandon her dreams of ballet due to a knee injury at the age of 14. Undeterred, she transitioned into modeling, gracing the covers of teen-oriented magazines like Seventeen, eventually becoming a teen sensation. However, the repetitiveness of the modeling world led her to reconsider, and she decided to try her hand at acting.
At a pivotal moment in New York’s Studio 54, Cates crossed paths with her film agent, leading her to train with Robert Ravan, founder of The Actors’ Circle in New York. Reflecting on her decision to pursue acting, she expressed a desire to avoid college and saw acting as a potential alternative.
