Famous restaurant announces it will close permanently this week

An upscale Oakland Mexican restaurant is shutting its doors for good this week, its owners said Monday.
Calavera, at 2337 Broadway in Uptown, will close permanently on Saturday, Jan. 6, according to a post on the restaurant’s Instagram page.
“The time has come to say goodbye,” the owners said. “This is not the way we wanted the new year to start, however, we have made the more than difficult decision to shut our doors.”

“As you all know, the state of Oakland hasn’t been kind to small businesses — with less foot traffic and severely decreased sales, we cannot continue on,” the post said.

The restaurant will be open for normal dinner service beginning at 5 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday, according to the post.

The New Year’s Day announcement marks the latest departure from the Oakland restaurant scene. Last month, popular Oakland pizzeria Sister announced its last day of service would be Jan. 27, citing insufficient revenue. Lena’s Soul Food, an Oakland hot spot for fried chicken, macaroni and cheese and baked fish, closed for good on Christmas Eve due to “challenges posed by the current circumstances.”
