Given the recent surge in violent crimes and robberies across the United States during the pandemic, it is apt to revisit an incident from December 2019 that involved a FedEx driver and an attempted robbery.
The Incident: A Day Turned Tragic
The situation unfolded when a 32-year-old FedEx driver was delivering a package to a residence on Unruh Avenue’s 600 block. Out of the blue, an armed robber confronted him, took his wallet and keys, and shot him, shared Philadelphia Police Department Captain Jason Smith. Showing a brave front, the driver retaliated, firing at his attacker, critically wounding a 27-year-old named Jevan Lundy.
The Aftermath: A Twist of Fate
Subsequent to the incident, Lundy was discovered by the police in an unconscious state on Creston Street’s 1400 block. Upon arrival at Einstein Medical Center, Lundy was pronounced dead. At the crime scene, investigators found the FedEx driver’s identification card.
Another man was found at the scene along with Lundy. The police examined a vehicle present at the location, theorizing that it might have been used to transport Lundy after the shooting. This individual was brought in for interrogation, but it was unclear whether he was under any charges. Captain Smith stated, “He is speaking to us, of course not portraying that he had any involvement with this robbery.”
Unraveling the Story: A Tale of Survival
After the incident, the FedEx driver managed to flee the scene. He was found in an Acme parking lot on Oxford Avenue’s 6600 block, in a state of distress with a gunshot wound to his stomach.
The driver told the officers that he had fired at Lundy. On searching the truck, the officers recovered his legally registered 9mm handgun and carry permit. Commenting on the case, Acting Police Commissioner Christine Coulter said, “Based on the preliminary story that was relayed, it appears to be self-defense: he was shot first, he fired back.”
Reactions and Statements: The Neighborhood and FedEx
Margie Helverson, a local resident where the shooting occurred, recognized the driver as a “nice guy.” She shared her concern, stating, “He’ll ring the doorbell to let you know there’s a package there, so I’m praying he’s OK.”
FedEx, however, did not comment on their company policy concerning drivers carrying firearms. A spokesperson stated, “The safety of our team members and service providers is a top priority and we are cooperating fully with the investigating authorities at this time.”
